back from MN...

D.W.Q.M.: Steven: "Well, what does that do?" the First Doctor: "That is the dematerializing control. And that over yonder is the horizontal hold. Up there is the scanner, those are the doors, that is a chair with a panda on it. Sheer poetry my dear boy. Now please, stop bothering me." I just got back from Minnesota a couple of hours ago. What's that I hear? Nothing. Silence, pure, blissful silence. All nice and quiet. The throbbing in my head has disappeared. ...so why am I suddenly feeling homesick? There is a tiny brown spot on my jeans where Mellon decided to rub her chocolate covered face earlier this afternoon. Awwww..... *sniff*

Tis the season!!!

I absolutely LOVE this house!!!

it's Sarah Jane!

D.W.Q.M.: "I had no problem with space stuff. I've seen things you wouldn't believe!" -Sarah Jane Smith (from the Tenth Doctor story, School Reunion ). I know it's supposed to be a kids show-but who cares? I think it's perfectly normal for adults to enjoy a kids show. ;) A sonic screwdriver disguised as lipstick? Oh, I so want one of those!!!!!! Sarah Jane rocks. :) (yay, sarah jane!) :-D

well, then, maybe I won't!

D.W.Q.M.: "We still have our homicidial computer to deal with." -the Sixth Doctor Okay, go figure-I decide that I might actually give beta a try. I had read reports that beta version blogs were slower to load, but SJA.tv loaded fine both at work and at home, so I thought I would be fine. However, when logging into blogger from home, my invitation is no longer there. Well, then!! Perhaps that is a sign. I've also noticed that there are more complaints about blogger beta from users publishing via their own ftp server then there were earlier. Right now, I'm leaning towards waiting until I absolutely have to switch, since they eventually want to switch everyone over. For now, I'm going to keep Wandering, the Idiot's Lantern , and Ro Knits on Blogger, and request an invite to the beta blogger for SJA.tv , and merge my accounts when I have to switch over the others. Silly Blogger, why do you have to make things so complicated?!?! :p I have other things I need to

To switch or not to switch...

D.W.Q.M.: "You've done up the place. Don't like it."-the Second Doctor (from the Five Doctors) Hmm...well, I'm debating on switching my blogs over to Blogger Beta. One of the blogs I write for, Sarah-Jane.tv has already switched, and I can't access it until I either switch over completely to beta, or ask jackharkness to send me another invite so I can log in using my google account. I don't think I'll have a problem with my blogspot blogs-but I am worried about switching Wandering... over, since I publish that using an external ftp server. I've heard of people who haven't had a problem, and those who have. It looks like I'll eventually have to switch it all over, but until then, I have a few questions for the folks at Blogger. Go figure-this happens just as I'm about to go on vacation! If I do decide to switch over completely, I'll post a note using the old Blogger, along with an alternative blog just in case the transition doesn

December Night Sky

D.W.Q.M.: Duke Juliano: "There's this man in Florence claims that by arranging ground glasses in a certain order, it's possible to see the moon and stars as large as your hand." Marco: "Is that a good thing?" (from the Fourth Doctor story, the Masque of Madragora) AstroAlert: A Solar Minimum Surprise - Major Solar Flares Okay, I thought about just summing this up, but I won't do it a bit of justice, so this is a copy of the email alert I got from Cary Oler at the Solar Terrestrial Dispatch : MAJOR X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE ALERT The Sun has produced a solar minimum surprise! At 10:35 UTC on 5 December, a new solar region now beginning to rotate around the eastern solar limb produced a powerful class X9.0 solar flare. The region in question appears to be quite large and was relatively quiet until today's significant outburst. Such powerful outbursts are not uncommon for the solar minimum in which we currently reside. Indeed, it is known that large and pote

Not your mother's spinoff...some thoughts on Torchwood.

D.W.Q.M.: "It was your instincts and intuition against my logic, and you succeeded." -the First Doctor, to Barbara I was reading an interesting post over at Torchwood.TV by Raxacoricofallapatorius, which got me thinking... ...would Torchwood make it over here in the U.S.? Where would it air? Actually, I had been thinking about that since I saw the first couple of episodes, Everything Changes and Day One . We had been warned about the swearing so much that I was expecting F-bombs to be dropped every other line. When it finally did happen, it was in such a setting that if this were a real life situation, yeah, I'd expect to hear F-bombs being dropped. Not family friendly, but not so outrageous that you're gonna say, 'Oh come, on! Enough already!!'. And then there was the talk about sex in episode two-actually, I didn't know what to expect, and I have to admit, I was taken slightly aback (me still being quite naive about watching such things), but again,

It's that time of year again...

D.W.Q.M.: "You've redecorated!" -Sarah Jane Smith ...when my apartment has become a jungle of Christmas boxes, stuffed with decorations, just waiting to be let out! I think I've already knocked my ankles up at least 20 times...I'll be seeing bruising soon, I'm sure. Yesterday afternoon, my bed was loaded with boxes, and I was relaxing in the living room when I heard my cell phone go off in my bedroom. Making a mad dash, I discovered that the easiest path to my phone was across my bed-so I jumped across it, landing with a soft *thud*, amazed that I hadn't disturbed my boxes much...although a couple had fallen on top of me. *ow!* (the call was from my sister-she wanted to make sure I brought my Favre jersey with me to MN-the Packers are playing the Vikings on the 21st!) You know, it's really hard to get in the mood to decorate for Christmas when the weather is warm and sunny, the windows are open, and I can hear birds chirping outside. God forbid I ever

Happy Thanksgiving!

D.W.Q.M.: "...why am I thinking of food?" -the Second Doctor Even though the day is almost over, and those of us who are crazy enough to get up and do some early doorbuster shopping tomorrow are probably in bed (well, except for me ;) ), I'd still like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! Ro and Shar's LAFF Plan update #1

D.W.Q.M.: "Carrot juice, carrot juice..." -the Sixth Doctor I've been meaning to post my progress on our Look and Feel Fantastic Plan that Shar and I started in September, but I just haven't gotten around to it. I find it slightly amusing that the day I decide to update is right after our staff potluck luncheon. I've never felt so stuffed at work in my life! ;) So far it's working great! I've lost at least 10lbs since I've started-even my doctor congratulated me! :) He told me to keep up the good work, and I'll see him again sometime in March for a follow up to see how my chloresterol is (it's a little high right now.) Thankfully everything else is ok-I was mainly worried about my glucose levels-since diabetes does run in my family-but they are normal-yay! Shar and I have been trying to get more walks in at work-I think it's awesome that we are both doing this-we give each other moral support when someone brings in baked goods to share,

Happy Halloween!

D.W.Q.M.: Ian: "Where's your spirit of adventure, hm?" the First Doctor: "It died a slow and painful death when those bats came out of the rafters." Happy Halloween, everybody! 2003 Jack-o-Lanterns: (I really need to upload our pumpkins from 2004& 2005!) No Jack-o-Lanterns this year-neither Perseph nor I had enough time to make one. It seems as though October just started, and now it's Halloween! Perhaps next October won't be as crazy. ;) We are planning on dressing up and giving out candy to the kiddies-there's going to be a bunch of us tonight. It'll be fun! First snow

D.W.Q.M.: Barbara: "Perhaps it's frozen." the First Doctor: "No, impossible... not in this temperature. Besides, it's too warm." It's snowing!!! It's so odd-just a few flurries here and there, then some sun, then a big burst of flurries. Rinse, repeat. Shar and I took a walk outside-boy, is it brisk! The weatherbug cannot be right-it says it's 40 degrees out! ;) At one point, it looked like a snow shower, instead of flurries-and with the sun shining, it looked pretty cool. It's like we're in a snowglobe that someone shook, and now the snows all settled. It isn't sticking to the ground, but it stuck to my glove. (I'm glad I took the time to get a warmer jacket out this morning!) Is this the lake effect we are supposed to be getting? It came alot earlier than predicted! SNOW!!! Woo!

baseball, kiddies, and Who

Image
D.W.Q.M.: "One must always accept the unexpected." -the Fourth Doctor Oooh, I knew I should have posted about the Twins yesterday before they played. Once again, the Royals prevented us from tieing (or overtaking) the Tigers for first place in the division. Grrr... That's ok-miracles can still happen. After all, many thought the Twins were finished before the All-Star break. For those who doubted, I have this to say to you: HA! Last time the Twins were in town, I went to the one game that the Indians won in that series. Several Tribe fans started to make fun of me (and the handfull of other Twins fans in our section) and I stood up and bravely (or foolishly, depending on your point of view) shouted, "That's okay, 'cause come October, we'll still be playing." *heehee* It was a fun game though-pretty intense. I liked the fact that the other Twins fans around me were quite vocal-my cheering didn't echo quite so much. ;) When Joe Mauer first step

Ro and Shar's Look and Feel Fantastic Plan

D.W.Q.M.: "Carrot juice, carrot juice, carrot juice..." -the Sixth Doctor Okay! Labor Day has come and gone-it's the end of summer. Time to turn over a new leaf! Shar and I have decided to try to loose some weight together. (I for one, would be much happier if my jeans were a little 'not-so-tight') So we have a weekly weigh in-last Tuesday we both started at X. Unfortunately, due to carelessness and an evening of stadium food ( mmmm....garlic fries... ) I gained a little. Shar did great though-yay, Shar!! Anyhoo, the idea is, we'll keep track of what we eat, try to exercise more (which includes more lunchtime walks), and just basically give each other some moral support. Workplace weightloss programs seem to be the new thing-there's Weight Watchers at Work next door-it meets every Wednesday, and apparently there's a 'biggest loser' type contest going on here at work (although I'm not taking part in that.) I really need to start walking m

Thoughts on the past...

It's hard to believe it's been 5 years. I try to keep this blog light-can't say I'm always 100% successful. Especially today as I write this, because there's nothing "light" about what happened. I was even debating about posting, because I'm not sure I have the strength, or the words, to acturately express how I feel. As I watched the memorial ceremonies, and personal accounts of what happened, my eyes welled up with tears, and my chest tightened, just like it had done 5 years ago as I watched the coverage all night for several nights because I couldn't sleep. I had to stop watching after about an hour (actually, I'm amazed I was able to last that long.) Then, those first few days five years ago, I saw something amazing-for once, there were no Democrats, no Republicans, no blacks, no whites, reds, yellows, no Jews, Muslims, Christians... It didn't matter if you were from this country or not-we were all one-pulling together to help and comfo

Bats, Pots, Tots, & Pucks

D.W.Q.M.: Brigadier: " Do you know what you're doing?" the Third Doctor: "My dear chap, I can't wait to find out." Okay, so I didn't do very well with the August blog challenge this year-the last half of the month was kind of crazy, so I didn't post much-I'll do better next year! So I shouldn't have looked at the baseball scores yesterday-I had no idea that the Twins were only 4 games behind the Tigers-what happened to that 9 game lead Detroit had? Woo! Unfortunately the Twins lost to them last night (in the Metrodome!), so they are now 5 games behind. :( They are still ahead in the Wild Card race...by one half game (thanks to the Indians for beating the White Sox) Seriously, you can't discount the Tigers, the Twins, or the White Sox yet-it's going to be a loonnnngggg road to October. The Wild Card race is giving me some serious heart burn-one day they are half a game ahead of the White Sox, the next, they are half a game behind! Ah

Atlantis launch postposed again...

D.W.Q.M.: Cornish: "Control to capsule: do you have visual contact?" the Third Doctor: "Do you mean 'Can I see it'?" NASA has postponed Atlantis' launch again, due to the fuel tank sensor problem. Check out the latest news here. The launch has been rescheduled for 11:15am, EDT, tomorrow.

The Feast 2006

D.W.Q.M.: the Second Doctor: "If only I could find my recorder, I could play you a little something to pass the time." the Brigadier: "We should be thankful for small mercies." Ahh, here we are, half way through the Feast of the Assumption. Two days behind us, two days ahead. It's been a rough week-(not even Feast related). But hopefully things will start to calm down soon. The Feast has been fun, though-the weather has been great-not too warm in the evenings. Tonight there is a 50 percent chance that we may be rained out, so we'll see. Hopefully the weather will be nice when we do the procession tomorrow morning. The first night we were at the home of one of the shut-ins, playing some music for her, when, right in the middle of Tik Tok Polka a lady in the house next door slammed her window shut. Half the band nearly lost it while playing. LOL. Oh, well-at least the woman who we were playing for enjoyed the music. ;) Suprisingly, after two nights of the Fe

Marco: "Is that a good thing?" (from the Fourth Doctor story, the Masque of Madragora ) I've decided that if I don't get to the night sky posts until the middle of the month, I'll still write about events that happened in the past. Today's astronomy post is brought to you by Sky and Telescope. Sky Events August 2nd: Jupiter reaches quadrature (90 degrees east of the Sun) August 7th-10th: Mercury is 2 degrees below Venus near the eastern horizon at the first hint of dawn twilight. August 9th: Full Moon August 10th: Neptune in opposition. August 11th-12th: This morning and tomorrow, Venus forms a nearly straight line with Castor and Pollux. August 12th: Perseids peak, but the moon interferes (see below). August 16th: From now until the end of the month-10:30pm-1

August Blog Challenge #5

D.W.Q.M.: "Eureka!" -the Third Doctor Apparently, the same thing made me and Michael happy today. It's finally official!!! Both the BBC and the SciFi Channel have confirmed that series 2 of Doctor Who will air on the SciFi Channel starting at the end of September! YAY! New Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica on the same night?! I'm in scifi heaven. Perseph and Foofy-better make room on the couch! I'm comin' over!!!! (oh, and the Twins won again last night! They won the series against the Tigers! Woo-Hoo!) *Romana does the happy dance all the way home.*

August Blog Challenge #4

D.W.Q.M.: "You know, I am so constantly outwitting the opposition, I tend to forget the delight and satisfaction of the arts... the gentle art of fisticuffs." -the First Doctor Things that make me happy: Good sports days- Twins: 4 Tigers: 2 Yeah, baby!! The Twins are currently in Detroit-playing the best team in the league. I have to admit-the Tigers are kicking some major butt this year. So at the start of this series, all I asked was that the Twins don't get swept-let them win just one game and I'll be happy. Last night I got my wish! It's so hard being a Twins fan here in Cleveland-the only time I get to see them play is if they are playing the Indians or the White Sox (thanks to WGN.) So last night I spent the evening surfing through all the channels that show scores-and when I saw the Twins score, I couldn't help it, I shouted "YEAH!" and jumped off the couch. ;) So I got my wish, and I'm quite happy. Of course, if they win again tonight-

August Blog Challenge #3

D.W.Q.M.: "There's no point in being grownup if you can't be childish, sometimes." -the Fourth Doctor Oooh! Two days in a row! No matter how hard I try to change (well, I don't really try that hard)-I will ALWAYS be a kid at heart. ;) Today Sharon and I were reminscing about Sesame Street, and I found this-my favorite Sesame Street sketch/song EVER! "MUSIC!" Ahh, that never grows old! I still get a silly grin after watching it. ;) I had a vinyl LP of Sesame Street with this song on it-it was my first record-and I just love this song! Of course, on the record, it ends with Harry telling Cookie that he does know about up and down. And Cookie replies, "Well, of course I do!" So Harry asked why he was looking up in the sky for his cookie, and Cookie says, "Because I dropped it and then a birdie came and grabbed it!" (or something along those lines.) I remember seeing it on tv while I was in college-I was flipping through the channels,

August Blog Challenge #2

D.W.Q.M.: "How about a trip in the TARDIS? I'm just off." -the Fourth Doctor Hmm...well, it looks like this is going to be a weekly entry, rather than a daily-or maybe every other day... :) Happiness is... Road trips! Friday Perseph , Jerm and I went to Orville to visit Smuckers, and explore the area. Smuckers was fun-I love the big Doughboy they have in the middle of the store. Krismutt came too-and I hope I have time to update his page soon(I haven't updated it in ages!). The ladies and Smuckers loved him-I was taking a picture of him writing on a chalkboard table, when they came up and said, 'Oh, how cute! I wish my dog behaved that well.' LOL. We also got some cute shots of him hanging around town. :) Of course, when you're in Amish country, you have to stop for some cheese-I bought some yummy smoked Gouda, and some Norwegian Jalsberg-YUM! :-D We also stopped in a store called World Crafts-they had some really cool stuff. All of the items in the sto

August Blog Challenge #1

D.W.Q.M.: "It takes all sorts to make the galaxy." -the Fourth Doctor Last year, I participated in the August Blog challenge-where everyday (or most days) I'd write about something that makes me happy. Michael has challenged us to do it again this year, so I'm certainly going to try. (btw, this is Michael's 3rd year for the challenge) What made me happy today? Unexpected kindness from a cashier. Sometimes there are just days when you get the cashier who is tired, grumpy, and had a bad day. They toss your stuff around like they don't care, and have a serious attitude problem. I always try to be nice to the cashiers, but if you're rude to me and I didn't do anything to deserve it, well then... So, anyway- Perseph and I had to run to "the evil" Walmart today, and we both managed to forget a bag at the counter. We discovered our error several feet from the door-I turned around to go back from them, and there was our cashier, running after us s

too...hot...

D.W.Q.M.: Barbara: "Perhaps it's frozen." the First Doctor: "No, impossible... not in this temperature. Besides, it's too warm." Ugh. It is entirely too hot. I hate the heat. I could never move out west or down south-I would just be too miserable. Unfortunately, I wouldn't escape the heat if I went up north! Minneapolis is supposed to get up to 102 today-and no one believes me when I say it can get pretty hot and miserable in Minnesota... I finally broke down and installed my air conditioner yesterday. I know you must think I'm nuts for waiting this long-but actually, I had been doing pretty well up to now. Saturday night was the first night that I couldn't sleep because it was too warm. So, with the heat advisories for this week, plus the fact that I'm fighting off an ear infection(which feels 10x worse when it's hot and muggy) I installed the good 'ol A/C, and my apartment is much more comfortable now. ;) This past Saturday was the

Ro vs. the Elevator

D.W.Q.M.: Ian: "Where's your spirit of adventure, hm?" the First Doctor: "It died a slow and painful death when those bats came out of the rafters." There are times when our "library of the future" doesn't seem so futuristic. Why must everything keep breaking down? The other day I had to bring some microfilm I was linking from the second floor back down to the first floor. I took my truck, loaded with microfilm, and headed for the elevators. After waiting a bit, elevator #2 opened up and I pushed my truck inside and hit '1'. The doors closed, the elevator hummed, the display went from 2 to 1, and the elevator dinged like it was going to open... ...only it didn't open. The arrow indicated that it now wanted to go up, but the elevator itself didn't move-it dinged a few more times, the arrow still pointing up, flashed 'LL' briefly, dinged some more...and just when I thought I was going to have to hit the emergency button, the

writer's block and no, we aren't twins...

D.W.Q.M.: "The universe should be big enough for the both of us ... just." -the Second Doctor Ok, I'm having a serious case of writer's block when it comes to writing about my trip to MN. I've been home for 2 weeks now-everytime I sit down to write something...I just don't know what to write. The trip up was pretty uneventful (ooh, just wait until I get around to the trip back...) Anyhoo, the ride from Cleveland to Chicago was pretty unpleasant-the guy I was sitting next to had a tendency to cover both seats when he fell asleep (unintentional, I assume)-it was awfully hard to wake him, so I spent most of the ride riding on the edge of the seat. The ride also seemed to be one of the bumpiest ever-did the driver have to hit every, pothole there was? So much for sleeping the first half of the trip... The second half was much better-I was waiting in line for the next bus with a girl who was heading for St. Paul-we were comparing our trip to Chicago, and when it
