The tvjunkie files #1

D.W.Q.M.: "I'm a tiger when my dander's up!" -Jago (a character from the episode the Talons of Weng-Chiang) As promised! here's the first edition of the tvjunkie files! ;) Series: Enterprise Episode: The Xindi Original airdate: 9/10/2003, season premiere. Yah, i know, way late-and my review won't be as in-depth because of it. Okay, first of all, if you want to improve the theme for a star trek series, you do not add a faster drum beat interlaced with some gitar. Now, I was never a big fan of the Rod Stewart song for the enterprise them (come on, it's Star Trek!!) But when the faster beat and gitar was added, it took all the magestic (sp? too lazy to look up) feeling out of it. This might take longer to grow on me than the original did. My main problem with Enterprise is it's entire premise-100 years before Captian Kirk. I guess I'm not very fond of prequels-they lead to too many inconsistencies. Plus, the ship is en...

Days of Our Libraries, episode 1

D.W.Q.M.: Sgt. Benton: "Do you know what it's all about? " Jo Grant: "Not really, just that it's aliens from outer space. " Benton: "It always is." The question of the day is, what the heck is a metadata librarian? Okay, so we have this new position open, a position for a metadata librarian. We were told it was like Jean's old job (Jean retired almost a year ago) but not. Jean cataloged videos, dvds, microfilm, original cataloging of books, reclassifying some of the deweys. When she retired, her work was divided up and given to others. Now, before I go on, a little history of the interviewing process at the library. When I interviewed for my full time positition, I gave my resume to Human Resources and filled out a form there. I was called in for an interview, and for less than an hour, interviewed with one person-the supervisor of the department. After that, I had a follow up at HR about a week later, and we set my start d...

Community Service Day

D.W.Q.M.: "Well ... it is a fact, Jamie, that I do tend to get involved. " -the Second Doctor I haven't been doing many community service projects lately-I did quite a few when I was in high school, especially when I was in Key Club . In college, I only did a couple of things here and there. So, when the President of C WRU (*heehee*) announced the first (and hopefully annual) community service day , I decided to jump at the chance and do something. The 'day' (actually, it was only a half a day) started off on the 17th, with checking in with our project leaders, and receiving our blue tshirt and a box lunch. The President said a few words, and then we met up with our group to be transported to the site. I was assigned to paint the home of an elderly gentleman. There were 22 people in my group, and that wasn't including the contractors who were on the site with us. When we got on the bus, our group leaders decided it would be a good idea to...

Thank you, Fare Watcher!!!!!!!

D.W.Q.M.: "How about a trip in the TARDIS? I'm just off." -the Fourth Doctor Woo-hoo!! It's only September, and I already have my flight for Christmas!! Yay! Non-stop to MPLS, and it's less than $250!! I still can't believe it!!! I had travelocity watch some fares for me, and usually it's not very helpful (the flight times are bad) but I hit the jackpot!! I'm sorry i'm so bubbly, but I was a little worried-last year my flight was over $300, and when I started looking last week, it was in the $349-375 price range (yikes!) *whew* I am quite relieved. :) And coming soon to a blog near you(hopefully): the tvjunkie files! I was thinking about reviewing some of the stuff I watch on tv here (for those of you who know my tv habits, don't worry, it won't be everything -just the season premieres and a few episodes here and there. They would be my opinions, plus the added comment from people who watch them with me. ;) I was going to st...
Matt. 5:4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Rom. 12:21 "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

I ain't gonna use that new-fangled contraption!

D.W.Q.M.: "We still have our homicidal computer to deal with." - the 6th Doctor Ahh, time for a little lunchtime blogging. Okay, I'll admit, new techy things can be cool-but sometimes they are a pain in the butt!! For example, today the library just received new copiers. It's amazing what copiers can do now-you can scan, copy, fax, and use it as a printer! (i personally do not use it as a printer, 'cause i get very annoyed when I'm copying new approval slips in colors other than white, and a printing job comes through-priority goes to the printing job, and the owner has their work printed out in lovely pink, blue, or purple paper...depending on the week) Well, all morning staff memebers having been running back and forth, trying to figure out how to work the new mega-copier...and aparrently it's not set up for printing yet, and when you copy, if you put the item you want copied on the left side of the copier, you get a honking huge legal size ...

Like mother, like daughter, or, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree....or something. :)

D.W.Q.M.: "There's nothing only about being a girl." -Sarah Jane Smith You would never guess it by just looking at her. I mean, how could this sweet, innocent mother/grandmother, who knits and crochets, is active in her church community and spoils her children and grandchildren (especially her grandchildren!) be a scifi nut? Well, that's my mom!! My father is responsible for my love of astronomy, and he is also partially responsible for my love of scifi as well...but my mom certainly has had a hand in it!! Besides Doctor Who, my mom would watch BattlestaR Galatica with me when I was little, as well as the original Star Trek. Later in high school, she introduced me to the Dragonriders of Pern series, as well as the Rowan series (both written by Anne McCaffrey) Well, this past summer while I was in Minnesota, she got me hooked on Charmed-she would watch it on TNT when she would get home from work, and I would join her. So, when she came to visit me las...

the end of summer...

D.W.Q.M.: "Sleep is for tortoises!" -the Fourth Doctor Hmm...maybe I should have used that one for one of my Feast entries!! ;) With Sunday came the last gig for Italian band until Good Friday next year. I seem to be associating the end of summer with the end of the festival at St. Rocco's lately-after all, after Labor Day, everyone is back in school, so summer is essentially over (although not techincally until the autumnal equinox-sorry, the astronomer (albeit amateur) in me rears it's ugly (well not really ugly-i like astro stuff!) head every once in a while-thanks, Daddy! :) ) *heehee* This was a rather weird weekend-didn't seem like a 'normal' St. Rocco's gig at all...except for the Zepolli-there was still tons of Zepolli!!! Yum!!! (basically zepolli is fried dough with powdered sugar-better than elephant ears-and must be eaten right away, otherwise they get kinda gross-they taste really awesome when they are hot!-if your tounge can st...

St. Rocco's

D.W.Q.M.: 2nd Doctor: "Let's have a tune to cheer us all up!" Ben: "Yeah, I didn't think we'd heard the last of that." (the Doctor begins to play his recorder) Ah, yes! St. Rocco's. . Our last gig of the summer. Here is the schedule of events (i'm sorry this is posted so late-I've either been too busy, or the network's been too slow!!) Saturday, August 30th: Evening concert, 7pm. We usually start with a short set while we're all standing in a circle in the middle of the festival-we play for about 45 minutes or so, and then we get a break. The rest of the evening is a sitdown concert, with at least one more break during the night. There is usually a bandstand, so you can't miss us. ;) play until 10:30 or so, but, like the Feast, this may change, and we may play a little later-who knows? ;) Sunday, Augusts 31st: Procession, 3pm. We start in front of the church, but I'm not as familiar with the route as I a...

And finally! :)

D.w.Q.M.: Jo: "So that was some sort of spell you said?" The Third Doctor: "He thought it was. That's why he ran away. Actually it was the first line of a Venusian lullaby. Roughly translated, it goes, "Close your eyes, my darling; well, three of them at least." Ah, the last day of the Feast, but before we get to Little Italy, come with me to the West si-ide, to a little place called St. Rocco's :) During the Feast, St. Roccos celebrates St. Nicola with a small procession around the church (while processing, they pray the Rosary...in Italian....with us playing Itlalian marches the entire time) followed by a lucheon. We are told that if we stop playing, they stop moving. We process around the church and then into their dining hall, and after the food is blessed, we play some of the more popular Italian music while they eat. After everyone is served, they offer us lunch as well (they always make sure there is enough for the band!!) Once every...

...and still, the band played on...

D.W.Q.M.: "I can feel my hair curling, which either means its going to rain, or I'm onto something." -the Fourth Doctor Ah...the Feast just wouldn't be the Feast unless there was a threat of rain at least one of the days. All day Saturday (well, okay, the half of Saturday that I was up! ;) ) we watched the weather forecast and the radar-the rain was coming! Would it be enough to cancel the Feast? Of course not! We started off as usual in the streets, and there was a slight drizzle, which became heavier as time wore on. Jesse suggested to our fearless leader Nick, that we stop by Primo Vino ( I have yet to actually eat there!!) and play there while waiting it out. It looked like Nick didn't want to do that just yet (he wanted to go around the neighborhood some more) but Jesse convinced him that it would be a good idea-because we still had to get through Sunday (small procession around St. Roccos church, and the evening procession at Holy Rosary) and we ...

Procession, not a parade! :)

D.W.Q.M.: Ian: "Vicki, I didn't know you knew about the Beatles." Vicki: "Well of course I know about the Beatles...but...I didn't know they played classical music. Barbara: " Classical music?!" Ian: "Times change, Barbara (lowers voice slightly) times change." Before I go into the second day of the Feast, I have a little work related side note-here's a new one! One of the collection managers approached me today with a book with pages that seemed to be out of order. Upon further inspection, I noticed that there were pages missing, and it its place, were pages from a totally different book! Not even the same subject area! When I spoke to our vendor about it, she mentioned she had seen that before, but had no idea how or why it happens. :) Also-I get to be in a video! Sort of-our preservation department is making a video for new student employees, sort of a training video-the do's and don'ts, etc, etc. I don't ha...

...and the band played on...

"Holy Rosary, Batman!" -Jerm Well, this post will cover two events-the first night of the Feast, and the blackout we had here in Cleveland. Our first night at the Feast was rather short due to black out, which started just after 4pm. I was still at work-in the middle of a record, in fact, when the lights flickered, went out for a second, came back on-then we lost our internet connection, and all of the lights in the library went out and the emergency lights blinked on. Mike, one of our tech team members went around and told us to unplug everything. After we discovered that several other states and Canada was affected, I gave my sister a call in MN. I asked her if she still had power, and she groggily said 'yeah'. I told her to turn on CNN or something, and she started to tell me that she was sleepy. So I said, 'the entire eastern seaboard just lost power!'(an exaggeration, i know-but i got a very satisfying 'WHAT?!' from my sister. ;) ) She ...

Eureka!

D.W.Q.M.: "What do you think of my new face, by the way? Hmmm. I wasn't too sure of it myself to begin with, but it sort of grows on you." -The Third Doctor Woo-hoo! I changed my template!! Successfully!! Yay! Special thanks to both Jaya and Persephone for answering my questions! I survived both the blackout and the Feast. And coming soon to a blog near you: the Feast of the Assumption! ;) There was so much that went on that I want to share with you that i'm probably going to have to break it down and talk about each day seperately. Each day was completely different, and I had a great time! I also want to take the time now to thank all of my friends and coworkers who were able to come during the Feast to watch the Italian band-THANK YOU! :) :) (and i'll probably be thanking you again..) ;)

oopss..forgot to mention this

I knew I would forget to add something-our evening concerts usually last until 10:30 pm. :)

The Feast

D.W.Q.M.: "Now you've squashed my favorite Beatles." - the First Doctor Okay! As promised, here is a breakdown of the Feast of the Assumption: Evening concerts: at 6 we start playing in the street-usually in front of the school or the church, and work our way up through the crowd. This goes until about 6:30, sometimes earlier than that- and then we canvas the neighborhood-visit families giving parties, and also we visit the sick and shut-ins. (Father Rocco usually give us a list of parishoners who are unable to attend the Feast, and we go and visit them and play for them-they are always very appreciative of our visit!) That usually goes on until about 7:30 or so. We take a break, and the sit-down concerts start anywhere between 8-8:30pm. Usually in front of the church or school-you can't miss us, we sit in a circle right in the middle of the street! ;) Thursday, August 14th- Evening Concert Friday, August 15th- 11am Procession (well, give or take-t...

i'm a busy beaver!

D.W.Q.M.: "Sorry, must dash." -the Fifth Doctor Tacos Mariachi (To the tune of "Mexican Hat Dance") Ta-co, Ta-co, Ta-co It's taco night time tonight Ta-co, Ta-co, Ta-co It's starting to feel just right I just want to eat all of those tacos They make me feel good, oh those tacos From my hat and right down to my sock-o's I just want to eat all of them up Ole, Jerm (taco email submitted by Jerm last week) Yeah, I know, this is late-I didn't have time to post this last week, and since we had to move taco night to Friday this week, I thought I would post it now. We've all been so busy, that we couldn't get together on Wednesday or Thursday! (our normal taco rescheduled night). As Jerm said in today's email: "Whoa, tacos on Friday. That's got be against some sort of law, or maybe it's just a flaw in the matrix." ;) Yup, I've been pretty busy-and will be even more so with next week being t...

"I don't want to grow up, i'm a toys ' r' us kid..." ;)

D.W.Q.M.: "What's wrong with being childish? I like being childish." -the Third Doctor Only 2 copies of the Monster of Peladon in the entire Cleveland/cuyahoga public library systems, and they are both mine, mine, mine!!! Muahahahahahaaa... Ahem. I'm ok, really I am. Not long after I made my rant post, the first copy of Monster was returned to the library and sent my way (yay!). I picked it up on Thursday, but forgot to cancel my second hold-so when I went to return some dvds on Saturday, I passed by the hold shelves and noticed i had another item on the shelf. So I went and checked it out and noticed that some bozo forgot to rewind the tapes. Well, if i'm not going to be nice and take them both, I will at least be nice and rewind the tapes (so I don't get charged for them anyway. *heehee*) I told Jerm that when we watch them, we should watch tape 1 from one set, and tape 2 from the other. LOL. I thought about keeping them both the full 3 weeks, ...

*heehee* something my sister might say...

D.W.Q.M.: The Third Doctor to the Brigadier: "Do you think for once you could arrive before the nick of time?" Just in case he doesn't... ;) You will sink in a mire. You like to think you're normal, but deep down you really just want to strip off your clothes and roll around in chicken fat. What horrible Edward Gorey Death will you die? brought to you by Quizilla LOL, ok, i know this may be a bit morbid for me, but I saw this on Pirate Monkey and thought I would try it for fun. The result reminded me of something my sister might say to me!! :)

order cancelled due to suspended item-D'OH!!!!

D.W.Q.M.: "Well, I'll tell you something that should be of vital interest to you. That you, Sir, are a NITWIT!" -the Third Doctor Warning: tvjunkie rant ahead!! ;) Ever noticed how the less likely it seems you are going to get what you want, the more you want it? (duh!) *heehee* It started innocently enough, honest it did (be quiet, jerm! ;) LOL. ) Feeling particularly nostalgic, I wanted to check out a couple of Pertwee stories from Doctor Who-The Curse of Peladon and the Monster of Peladon. I was sure i had seen one of them, but I wasn't sure which one-both had a pretty memorable alien. I mean, who could forget an alien with a big, round, green head, one HUGE eyeball in the center of it, six arms with claws for hands, walked with a waddle, and spoke with a high, squeaky, girlish voice? Quiet comical. So, being the total geek that I am, and wanting to expand my Doctor Who collection, I decided to check out bestbuy.com to see if I could find them. ...
