Things are crazy at work though-while I was away, over 500 approval books arrived and are now waiting to be unpacked down in the mail room. 21 boxes, and only one was a small box. ;) Oh, well-at least I won't be bored and searching for things to do. Since I have a long weekend ahead of me, if I'm not using it to recover from my vacation (in other words, sleep!) I will try to post about my trip up north-got a lot of great pics-including some Krismutt pics for his page. *heehee* The only bummer is my camera fell apart the last day I was there, and I think I need to send it away to have it fixed. :p Oh, and speaking of near-future blog entries, my apologies to Jerm, who has already heard most of my stories, since he picked me up from the airport Monday night. I can't wait to see my family and friends in MN. :) Now I just have to get through the rest of today. As long as my plane can leave the area-it's all good. ;) My sister called me as I was getting ready for work this morning and asked me if my flight would be delayed. I was telling Jerm that I wish I had a camera to take a picture of it before it melted or was destroyed, and he told me to draw a picture. The Geminids peak this weekend-December 13th-14th. According to this online article at Sky and Telescope, the prime viewing hours will begin approx. 10pm EST on the 13th, and will last until dawn. Up to 75 meteors per hour, and they will appear to be yellow. Of course the moon will wash out some of the fainter meteors. And, if you are Jerm, you will probably assume it will be cloudy. ;) Actually, if you are in Cleveland, you will probably be in agreement. (Forecast for Cleveland Saturday night : clouds! Rats! See, the problem was that I had too many things due on Wednesday, three different places-the Blockbuster in South Euclid, the Cuyahoga County Public Library in South Euclid, the Main library in Cleveland Hts, and good ole' KSL. KSL wasn't really a problem-I go into work everyday, so it's not out of the way at all. Step 1: Remove most non-holiday knicknacks and stuffed animals from living room and dining room areas. Step 2: Clear desk and table of papers, paid bill stubs, magazines, junk mail and other assorted stuff that makes it's home there. Step 3: Dig out all boxes marked 'Christmas' from all nooks and crannies. As I struggled with removing some of the bigger boxes from my small closets, I came to the sad realization that I have probably reached my limit of Christmas decorations. The segment was reused again for the 20th Anniversary special, 'the Five Doctors'. It was shown just before the opening credits. Region 486 released an X-8 flare yesterday! They expect this to hit Earth sometime after midnight on November 4th (hey, that's Paul's birthday!) They also think this will be the last CME, since region 486 is almost out of visual range. check out http://www.spacew.com/cme/index.html for more info, and note that it says the predictions are based only on preliminary data, and may be revised without any warning. I would say if you are going to go looking for auroras, check the map just before you go out to see how high the activity is. I accidently gave you Cleveland's geographic latitude instead of the magnetic one. The magnetic latitude is 51, not 41. Thanks, Karen! :) (and that's what I get for trying to write a blog entry while im-ing 3 friends and taking a phone call at the same time. ;) ) Solar activity, for the most part, has settled down for now. Higher latitudes may still see some aurora displays, but those of us in the middle latitudes will not unless activity picks up again. Region 486 has finally started to decay, although NOAA's 3-day solar-geophysical forecast says that both regions 486 and 488 are still capable of producing some major flare activity. I went outside tonight (thursday) around 7pm EDT to wait for Persephone, Heather, and Jon (the four of us were going to dinner). I step outside my apartment, and notice that just above the roof, the sky was looking redder than usual-not 'the-sun-is-setting" red or 'hey-there's-a-fire!' red, but red as in 'northern lights' red. I couldn't believe it, since we've been disappointed the past couple of nights. So quickly ran around my building so I could get a better look, and lo and behold, I was seeing the aurora borealis!!! The northern lights! Here in Cleveland!!! I was soo excited-I gave Jerm a call 'cause a promised him I would (i hope he was able to see it from his apartment-there are an awful lot of trees in the direction of the display i saw) When Persephone, Heather, and Jon arrived, I began waving my arms around and ...

There, that's better. The warm front that came through last night also brought clouds and a few sprinkles-not good if you're trying to catch a glimpse of the northern lights!! According to NOAA there is going to be plenty of solar activity over the next few days. The active regions(there are currently three active regions-486, 488, and 484) of the sun are likely to produce more major flare activity (although probably not as big as the X17 on Tuesday). Yesterday region 486 (same region as the X17) produced another flare-X10. 486 has been the most active, with 488 looking promising also. 484 flares have been C and M class. I...

this is an update on the Aurora Borealis, as well as a test to see if I can get my blog to republish correctly! ;) Around 4am EDT, there was a reported sighting of the Aurora Borealis in Watersville, OH (near Toledo)!!!! Chances are good that we might actually see something, provided the weather holds up. (of course, as with most astronomical events of this type, we might see something, we might not. Here's hoping for the best!)

Last week we witnessed a solar storm that many hoped would trigger the aurorae (northern and southern lights). Well, I don't know about you, but it was too cloudy here in Cleveland to see anything. Sounds like there wasn't much to see, anyway. Never you fear, Aurorae lovers! We have another chance-and a much , much bigger one at that. First, a little astronomy lesson (I love this stuff!!!) Solar flares are classified as C (weak), M (moderate), and X(strong) with a corresponding number-the higher the number, the bigger the flare. Last week's solar flare was classifed between X1 and X5, according to SOHO (the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. The one that was emitted yesterday was classified as X17!!! We've pulled it out, plugged it back in, the main trouble is every time I try to delete the current drivers(so I can reinstall them), I get an error message saying there's an application that trying to use the drivers. After celebrating Jerm's birthday just a little early at Buca di Beppo's (I did survive...no reprocussions for surprising him...yet... ;) ), the four of us (me, Jerm, and P^2) decided to play some euchre at my place. There were some pretty heavy storms that night, and lightning struck somewhere very close to my apartment. That sound that the thunder makes just as lightning hits close by is enough to make your heart stop!! When that happened, we all heard something in the dining room pop (that's where I have my computer), and we saw a flash-a quick intial check lead me to believe that nothing was amiss...so we continued playing. The only other exciting event for the night was the power went out for a couple of seconds. The next day I try to get online...

Isn't anybody going to pay attention to that computer over there?" -the Third Doctor For about three years now I've been listening to WCLV in the morning-one of the few radio stations with morning programming that doesn't annoy me, plus, I get to hear the BBC news every weekday. ;) Well, I also get to hear the Wall Street Journal report, and they reported something that really disturbed me... (no, it's not the economy...) What was it that bothered me so much? Apparently sometime next year, the film company giant Kodak will begin to start concentrating more on digital products, instead of "traditional" photography products. Now, I know digital is cool and all, but I have never been a true fan of the digital camera-I will admit, they are kinda cool, but at least for me, they take all the fun out of photography.
